Pros and Cons of Moving on Your Own

Moving to another place may sound like an easy task to some people, but there’s a lot you probably don’t know, or don’t realize yet. It comes with a host of different choices. Now we’ll talk about the pros and cons of moving on your own. At the end, you’ll find it much easier to decide if you’re capable to undertake this amenable task on your own, or you’d better reach for the help of professionals.

Moving on Your Own – Pros

  1. The control is in your hands – This is definitely the biggest pro if you’ve decided to undertake the moving process. You get to choose the removal van, the needed supplies, etc. You’ll be the person in charge, so you’ll make sure that all boxes are safe and secure, and nothing gets broken on the way. Also, you can choose the most comfortable time for you. You won’t have to worry about the removal guys putting your stuff wherever they decide is convenient.
  2. You’ll pay less – If you can’t afford hiring a removal company, moving on your own will definitely save you a lot of money. If you don’t have an eligible removal vehicle, you can consider the idea of hiring a moving truck. The price varies on the size of the vehicle, and the distance you’ll have to cover. You can ask friends or relatives to help you with the move, because it is hardly possible to do it all on your own. Don’t forget to treat them afterwards.
  3. You won’t have to worry about perfectly packed boxes – Another big pro when moving on your own is that you can decide exactly how and where to pack all of your things. When it comes to moving day, you’ll find a place for everything on the vehicle.

Moving on Your Own – Cons

  1. Heavy lifting – This is probably the biggest con. Yes, being in charge is great, but you’ll also have to lift all the heavy boxes, furniture, and everything that needs to be loaded on the truck. If you don’t have enough help from friends, you’ll probably give up at some point. Especially if there are staircases or other obstacles on the way. Also, if you don’t have any experience in moving, you and your helpers may damage some of the furniture; scratch your new home’s walls, or other unpleasant things.
  2. It’s all on you – The whole planning process is on your shoulders. At the beginning, you might not realize how much planning it will take, but when you get to the middle of the list, you’d probably want to give up. The whole logistics process is on you. You have to figure out how to get everything safely from your place, to the new one. Also, you’ll have to decide the best way to load the moving vehicle, which is a very crucial step.
  3. Some problems may occur – If you’re doing everything by yourself, it may take longer than expected, especially if you don’t have any special tools and equipment. Some furniture requires special treatment, and the professionals know how to handle such situations. But if you’re doing it on your own, you may waste hours of trying to figure out how to handle an unexpected situation.

Moving on your own really depends on how many stuff you’ve got. If you’re moving a one-bedroom apartment, you might do well by yourself, but if you’re moving a five-bedroom one, you’ll probably beg for help. So, consider well these pros and cons, and figure out what will work best for you.
