About furniture donation

Donate, don’t dump

If you happen to have a couch that you don’t want to use anymore but is in good shape, donating is a good idea. However, you have to ensure that the condition is good enough.

How to know if your furniture is good enough?

You can ask yourself whether or not you will buy your old sofa. Other than that, you can check the donation quality standards. If it doesn’t look good at all, you can recycle your furniture in the first place.

Check the website

Before donating, you better check the website in the first place. If still unsure, feel free to call.

Donation organizations regularly update their websites with terms and conditions. Some of them even offer furniture donation pick-up services.

More than anything, checking the requirements will help you to know what to prepare in the first place.

Meanwhile, if the donation centers require you to bring the items on your own, get help. You don’t want to struggle, and some pros will take care of your furniture.

Items you cannot donate

Some items don’t meet the qualification for a donation. The list is available widely on the internet.

Generally, you can donate everything but mattresses and box springs, skis, non-flat screen TVs, computer monitors, bed frames, and a few more. Mattresses might be able to be donated, but it requires dedicated recycling programs in the first place.

Things that might help

If you own or work at a retail store, you can work with donation centers like Goodwill. They will take your excess inventory as donations.

In case you will donate accepted appliance items, make sure that all parts work normally. Don’t forget to remove data and get rid of hazardous batteries.

After donating some furniture items, you can always ask for a tax receipt. The receipt will reduce your tax. Even though there are a few details the staff need to wire up, it is okay to ask for a tax deduction ticket, especially if you donated more than USD 250 worth.

If the furniture requires disassembly, you better help the staff to put the parts back. It allows them to speed up the process. Don’t just drop and leave.

Final words

Donating unused items in your home that you don’t use anymore is a good idea. However, you must check whether or not the things are appropriate for further use.

Generally, donating furniture helps families in need and keeps your house uncluttered. Even though selling stuff seems tempting, donating is always the best idea to consider.

Choose a donation company you would love to work with and enjoy the good feeling after donating the items you used to love!
