2 Ways to Prepare Your Gardens and Lawn for the Winter

Every year, summer comes to an end and fall arrives. Before you know it, winter is knocking at the door. Where does that leave your home’s landscaping? While you might be tempted to spend more time indoors now that there’s a chill in the air, making sure everything is taken care of outdoors first should be your priority. What you do will play a big part in how well everything does come springtime, so read on. Here are two things every homeowner should do to prepare and protect their gardens and lawn for the colder winter months.

  1. Tuck In Your Gardens

After working hard all summer long, it’s time for your gardens to rest. What you do with them now will have a big impact on how well they do once the weather turns warm again, so don’t leave them hanging.

By cutting back finished perennials and removing any remaining weeds, you’ll ensure a clean slate for spring’s arrival. Pruning back late-blooming shrubs should also happen at this time. If you’re looking to add some beautiful spring blooms to your garden, now is the time to plant bulbs. Also, don’t forget to replenish and refresh mulch. This is one of the best ways to provide protection and insulation during the colder winter months. Instead of hauling those heavy bags of mulch by yourself, take advantage of services such as mulch delivery Cincinnati to help make your project that much simpler.

  1. Pamper Your Lawn

Before you put your mower away, take it out for one last mow. Before you start, check the height on your mower deck to make sure you’re cutting at around 2 inches. You’ll also want to give your lawn a good dose of winter fertilizer. This will help to beef up roots so they’re ready and raring to do their thing in the springtime. Overseeding in sparse areas of your lawn will help you get ahead of the game as well.

Since your last mow will probably include plenty of leaves, reuse them along with your grass clippings. Add them into your compost pile or to your vegetable garden. This will encourage decomposition and create richer soil in your garden as well.

In just a few hours, you can make a lot of progress winterizing your gardens and lawn. Remember that everything you do now will be well worth it when spring rolls around again.
