What to Consider When Installing a Safe Room

A safe room has been glorified by movies and television as a secret compartment hidden behind a fake wall. They are used to protect valuable as well as people, come equipped with a computer panel, and are only accessed by an impenetrable door. The truth is a safe room does not have to be overly fancy at all. In fact, a safe room can be created out of any room in your house with little to no alteration really needed. They can be so low key most people entering the room would not even know that it is a safe room. So, if you want to provide some extra security, protect your family your home invasion, and avoid a huge expenditure here are some simple steps to follow.

Decide on the Type of Safe Room

Many safe room can be created quite simply. All that is required is a reinforced door frame, a door made of a solid piece of wood, and multiple locking mechanisms. Others require a little more work. Some safe rooms take the form of outside shelters, while others are traditional indoor safe rooms. Some can be rudimentary while others contain advanced technology. The first step is figuring out what is going to go in it. Will it just be people? Will it also contain a safe? How many people should be able to fit in it? These are all important questions to ask as they determine what type of room you will need.

Select the Room

Many people retrofit an already existing room into a safe room. This cannot just be any room in the house, however. The room chosen for a safe room needs to have no windows, skylights, or connecting rooms. There should only be one entrance in or out of the room. This saves on cost but also ensures extra protection. One choice many use for a safe room is a walk in closet.

Phone

The most important piece of tech inside a safe room is a phone. Some may have computers, but a phone is still the most important item to ensure is in your safe room. This allows communication in and out of the room. After you seal yourself inside you have to be able to call for help. A safe room is a good deterrent as long as there is something to drive the danger away. This cannot be a portable phone as they can be lost in the scramble. The phone has to be attached to the room so that it is always present.

Additions

A room with strong locks, a reinforced door, and a phone is all the safe room anyone really needs. Additional things are also good to install. Camera systems are good as it gives police something to go on. If a physical record of the perpetrators is made it can help catch them. A safe is a recommended addition for protecting valuables as well as containing a gun. A gun is good for scaring away trouble and serving as a last line of defense.
