Is Your Home Safe From Electrical Problems?

https://www.pacmanelectric.com/Being left in the dark is only one of the problems that can occur due to electrical problems in the home. Electrical fires cause around 500 deaths each year and more than $1 billion in damage. While many people try to fix problems on their own, only a professional with the proper licensing should fix electrical problems due to the many risks involved. Here are some signs that you may need to get an electrical repair cincinnati oh specialist before it’s too late:

Lighting Problems

Older homes tend to experience dimming or flickering lights more often than newer ones because of the state of the electrical system. If you notice that you are having problems with a certain lamp, unplug it and move it to a different electrical outlet in a different room to see if the problem still persists. If it does, there is most likely a problem with the lamp itself. If it doesn’t, there could be a problem with the wiring to that outlet that needs to be repaired. Lights don’t tend to use much power so if they are affected by larger appliances being turned on, those appliances may be their own dedicated line to ensure that they are provided with enough power.

Circuit Breaker and Fuse Problems

If you’ve noticed that you’ve frequently had to replace or flip fuses on your circuit breaker, the outlet affected may be overloaded. The system is designed in order to prevent overloading from electrical devices like vacuums and hair dryers that draw a lot of power. If it’s frequently happening, there may be underlying problems with the wiring.

Noises

If your electrical system is working properly, it shouldn’t make any noise. While electrical devices can make noises, if there is a buzzing sound from your walls or outlets there could be a serious problem just waiting to happen. A buzzing noise is caused by jumping currents and any outlet making this noise should stop being used immediately until it is repaired by an electrician.

Burning Smell

If you smell something burning in your home and cannot find the source, there is a chance that there is a short somewhere within your electrical system. This burning smell can quickly turn into a house fire that can have dire consequences. In fact, short circuits are known to be one of the leading causes of electrical fires in a home.

Old Wiring

If you have an older home, it’s important to make sure that the electrical system has been upgraded sufficiently. Appliances and wiring recommendations have changed dramatically over the past few decades and it’s important to make sure that your home can handle the electrical consumption that you use. If your system isn’t built to handle the electrical load, wires can easily overheat and cause fires to form in the walls.

Hot or Discolored Outlets

Electrical outlets should never be hot to the touch. If you notice that your outlet appears to have burn marks, it is an indication of an electrical problem. Stop using it immediately and call a professional.
