Knowing the exact measurement for your room is quite tricky, but it’s not impossible to do it yourself. However, this article will tell you the measurement methods for rooms.

Reading this article will help you in measuring the area and perimeter of the room yourself.

Sometimes measuring can become confused when getting having an irregular shape. The method of measuring depends on the reason because every reason has its requirement.

It needs different measurements for estimating the paint, carpets, tiling, ceiling or getting material for construction/renovation.

Reasons for measuring a room

There can be several reasons behind the measurement of the room, including some of the following:

  • Getting new paint on the walls
  • Installing a wallpaper
  • Renovating or constructing a room

So, whether you are painting a wall or planning for remodeling, the first thing is measuring the room.

Measuring the room in the right way would save your time and cost. Like it would cost you waste if you order less material or excessive material whereas it will waste your time too. This means it’s better to spend a few minutes on knowing the way of measuring instead of estimating it.

3 Best Ways of measuring a Room

Measuring Floors:

Step # 1:

  • Start with sketching your room on a piece of paper. This drawing will be used to record the measurement accurately.
  • It is not compulsory to include the doors and windows’ measurements, but it depends on your requirement and purpose of measurement.
  • You should add all the objects of the room, including the closets.

 Step # 2:

  • This step will include the measurement of length and width.
  • Measure maximum length and width through the fullest part of the room
  • Now use the standard formula of area for finalizing your result.

Area = [Length] x [Width]

  • This step will not include extras like windows, bathrooms, etc.

Step # 3:

  • Measure the remaining things that would include closets and round recesses.
  • Repeat the calculations if they in multiple quantities
  • Use the same formula for calculating area

Step # 4:

  • This step will measure the round recesses. Start with measure the most extended length and width (usually from the center).
  • Now, divide the measured length by two and multiply it with the width. Multiply the total number by 3.142 and divide the area in half.

Step # 5:

  • Now, add both of the calculations, including the room’s area and round recesses, and it will be the final calculations.

Measuring Walls:

Step # 1:

  • Measuring the wall will not be much different from the floor. Start with sketching the room on a piece of paper.
  • Measure each wall, including windows, doors, and hanging stuff.

Step # 2:

  • Measure the length and width of the wall by measuring tape accurately.
  • Use the standard area = [length] x [width] formula to calculate the measuring and let it be known as
  • As the wall may be high, you need to get the support of a friend or object.

Step # 3:

  • In this step, you will measure the length and width of all the doors, windows, and fixtures.
  • Use the same formula for calculating the area of these things and let it be considered as A2.

Step # 4:

  • Now, you will subtract the measurement of windows, doors, and fixtures from the walls’ area.

A1 – A2 = Final Result

Measure a room’s perimeter:

Step # 1:

  • First of all, measure the length and width of the room for which you are measuring.
  • Now, use the standard formula for calculating the perimeter in the room.

Perimeter = 2(length + width)

Step # 2:

  • This step will measure the irregularly shaped room. This step will be done manually because the perimeter of the irregular shaped room will need to be individually measured.
  • Use a calculator to add all the measurements of the irregular shaped room, and this will be the length of the perimeter of the room.

Manual vs. Tool Calculation: Which is better?

The manual calculation is not rocket science, but it may become confusing in an irregular shaped room.

Calculation of this type of room usually makes errors in the manual method. However, there is another way of solving it.

Numerous online calculators are providing the cubic calculator that would support you in getting the accurate measurements.

They take the necessary information and provide you the calculation in multiple units.

For example, we can use the cubic feet calculator by calculators.tech because it is one of the efficient and instant tools available online.

It just needs the measurements of length, width, and height, whereas it provides the option of multiple units, including inch, feet, yard, mm, cm, and meter.

Some calculators allow you to calculate the costing of the material for your measured room.

If you measure the room for buying the construction material, you can enter the rate of per cubic feet to get the final cost.

Conclusion

It is best to measure the wrong room way instead of spending more time and cost for bringing extra or lesser material.
