●      It Produces Weird Noises

One noticeable sign to know your sump pump is faulty is when you hear it producing strange noises. It is an indication of damaged or worn-out equipment. For instance, excess noise might be due to bearing failure, and a jammed impeller may cause a grinding or rattling noise.

●      Excess Vibration

Sump pumps also accumulate debris and foreign material after prolonged use, which might damage the impellers. Consequently, it malfunctions and causes excessive vibration because the propellers strain the shaft. The primary function of the impeller is to prevent the shaft from wearing out as they are spinning to pump the water. Therefore, if your sump pump has vibration sounds, it is a sign of an impending problem, and you need to replace the entire unit immediately.

●      Noticeable Rust

When you notice your sump pump has visible rust, it is a sign that you need to install a new one. The rust can be an indication of iron bacteria or corroded battery terminals. Eventually, the rust can clog the entire plumbing system and interfere with water circulation. Therefore, when your sump pump starts rusting, ensure you replace it immediately to avoid plumbing problems in case of heavy rains.

●      Occasional Pump Usage

When you don’t use your sump pump frequently, it might not function properly. You might not know if the pump has any issues or not. Moreover, infrequent use can reduce the lifespan of the sump pump. Therefore, it is imperative to test the pump regularly to know if the mechanisms are in good shape. If you don’t perform maintenance tests, you might get surprises during heavy rains and damage your house.

●      Non-stop Running

If your sump pump operates all the time without stopping, you might have a switch issue. The sump pump usually functions when you put the switch on and stops running when it is off with the help of a float mechanism. Thus, if the pump does not coordinate with the float, or the switch with the power source, the sump pump will run without stopping. If you encounter this issue, it is a red flag that you need to replace the sump pump.

●      Irregular Cycling

Sump pumps in good condition often have a regular cycle. Thus, if your pump has an on and off cycle with small intervals, there might be a malfunction. Though the float switch might have moved incorrectly in the basin, it is advisable to determine the primary cause of the irregular cycle. In addition, wiring problems might also be a cause for the odd intervals. Hence, you need to call a professional to check out the electrical system or establish if the sump pump needs immediate replacement.

●      Motor Failure

The primary reason a sump pump stops working is because of motor failure. Wiring malfunction is usually the cause, and you might need to get an electrician to check it out. You will know there is a problem when the pump can’t evacuate water from the basement. Other times, the sump pump might suffer from burnout when it runs at the maximum output because of harsh weather conditions. Therefore, make sure you call in an expert to establish the main problem in case of motor failure.

●      Power Outages

Sump pumps usually function directly from the electrical system. Thus, power outages affect the device and might damage the components. It is advisable to have an alternative sump pump that sources power from a marine battery.  Therefore, frequent power outages are a great risk to sump pumps, and you might need to replace the device more often.

It is imperative to have a functioning sump pump at all times. Don’t wait for the rainy season to check if your pump is faulty or in good condition. Instead, carry out frequent maintenance and if you find any issue, call in a sump pump repair expert immediately.
