Homeowners in Edmonton sometimes take their siding for granted. But do you know that your siding performs a very important function on your building? Siding in Edmonton protects the main brick wall from the elements and it also adds aesthetic value to your home. When this important part of your home gets worn or damaged, you need to either repair or replace it. Here are some of the signs that your siding is due for replacement.

1. Cracking or Peeling

Is your siding cracking, peeling or looking worn out? If just one or two sections have these signs, you may be able to call a building technician that does high quality home renovations in Edmonton. But if very large sections are peeling or cracking, you can be sure that water and air have started leaking into your home. In this case, there may be much more damage under the siding.

2. Siding is Warping or Rotting

Rotting or warping are sure signs that moisture has started infiltrating into your home. If you don’t handle this immediately, mildew and mould will appear and infest your home within a short time. When you are inspecting your siding, you need to use a screwdriver or a similar tool to poke the rotten area. If it is soft, then you need to ask a company that constructs and repairs siding in Edmonton to replace it quickly.

3. Siding Starts to Require Frequent Painting

Your siding will normally require repainting about once in ten years. But, when you find out that the paint gets dull and starts peeling almost every two to three years, it is time to plan for a replacement. Usually, this is a sign that there is some moisture coming into the siding and causing the paint to wear out quickly. Replacing siding in Edmonton with high quality vinyl siding will help you avoid the cost of repainting it later on.

4. Holes Appear on the Siding

The appearance of any holes on your siding is an ominous sign. Many holes that show up on your siding will be caused by insects. These insects have found a new home beneath your siding and now they are opening up the way for rain and moisture to come in to their new abode. This calls for urgent repairs. If the infestation is really serious, you will need to contact an expert that provides excellent home renovations in Edmonton to help you carry out repairs.

5. Fungal and Mould Growth on Your Siding

When you observe any growth of fungus, mould or mildew, you must act fast. Do a quick examination of your siding to see if the mould is just on the surface or if it has gone deep into the siding material. You need to call an expert to help you invest further so it can be dealt with thoroughly and promptly.

6. Dry Rot is Lurking Beneath the Siding

The upper surface of your siding may appear perfectly normal but dry rot may be hiding beneath the surface. This hidden rot has the potential to destroy the material underneath while the topmost section still appears intact. You need to test your siding for dry rot at least two times in a year. You can tap on the siding with a hard tool in different areas. This will expose the weak areas that have dry rot.

Now that you know the signs of damaged siding, you need to carefully inspect your siding and contact a competent renovations expert for advice or repairs.
